Typically, companies who have been quick to adopt the remote work model or have begun exploring it more, are a bit more forward-thinking when it comes to the workplace.
It’s an exciting time, as technology has improved drastically and more workers are speaking up for their rights to be treated better in the company.
And because of this shift, we also now see remote companies either adopting or experimenting with the 4-day workweek. However, many companies will still be a bit slower to try this work model, but that was very similar to remote work a few years ago.
Will the 4-day workweek model become more standardized? Hard to tell. But for now, we can explore more about this workplace model and which remote companies are in 4-day workweeks.
What is a 4-Day Workweek Called?
A 4-day workweek is where a workplace has employees working only four days per week. This is also referred to as a “compressed work schedule” and has become more prevalent in the last few years as organizations look for an edge to boost better work outcomes.
Is a 4-Day Workweek Still 40 Hours?
For companies testing out the 4-day workweek, many will require employees to hit their traditional 40 hours minimum per week. However, other companies are utilizing the 4-day workweek but allowing less than 40 hours (usually 32 hours) instead, to see how it affects productivity and company morale.
What Remote Companies Offer 4-Day Workweeks?
Now that we covered a bit more about the 4-day workweeks, are there any remote companies offering this schedule to their distributed employees? Why yes there is and more are starting to experiment with that as well.
What’s also cool about these remote companies offering shortened workweeks is the majority are sticking to just 32 hours required by employees.
Meaning, that 8-hour days are in effect but the organization doesn’t expect you to reach the traditional 40 hours. This is great news to maintain your work/life balance and still be productive in your work.
*Note some of these companies offer 4-day workweeks with reduced pay, are just experimenting, or may require 40 hours. I’ve called out the info to the associated company. Regardless, it’s great to see remote companies exploring this.

Does Canada have a 4-day workweek?
While remote companies in the United States have been exploring 4-day workweeks, Canadian-based companies are also giving this concept a serious chance. The majority are currently just piloting this work arrangement to see how it impacts results and work culture.
Does Europe Have a 4-day workweek?
Many European countries have led the way in exploring more benefits for employees, like the 4-day workweek. A few European countries where this work arrangement is happening or trials have happened include Belgium, Spain, the United Kingdom, Germany, Sweden, and Iceland.
Is Working 4 Days a Week Good?
In a study published by Autonomy, the researchers began tracking over 2,500 employees that had their workweeks reduced to 35 or 36 hours roughly. The employee’s pay stayed the exact same.
And what the study showed, was that workers had a dramatic increase in workplace happiness and well-being. Additionally, productivity stayed the same or improved, compared to the traditional 40-hour workweek.
Even beyond remote companies, people love the idea of workweeks being four days. A survey conducted by financial firm Jeffries of people who quit their jobs in the 22 to 35 age group, found the following:
- 32% would have stayed if they were offered a 4-day workweek.
- 80% of all respondents supported a 4-day workweek, 17% were neutral, and 3% weren’t against it.
Not only can working 4 days a week be good for the company and employees, but more people are in support of shortening the workweek too.
How to Find a 4-Day Workweek Job

1. Keep track of remote companies’ work policies

Head over to the company pages and sign-up for job alerts or check in on their careers page. You may find them updating their remote work policies and changing to a shorter workweek.
2. Set up keyword alerts
Researching remote companies is one thing, but you should consider setting up Google alerts for specific keywords around a 4-day workweek. This way you don’t have to blindly research and can wait for alerts to come to you.
Thinking of setting up alerts for terms like:
- “4 day work week”
- “4-day workweek”
- “Four day workweek”
- “Compressed workweek”
- “Short workweek”
- “32-hour workweek”
There might be other variations you can think of but ensure to add as many as you want. This will help automate your search and ensure you don’t miss companies or remote jobs with this option.
3. Know your skills that would be related to 4-day weeks
If you work remotely or are interested in remote work, it’s already good to highlight your skills that apply to this form of work. And additionally, 4-day workweeks will require a strong set of skills to ensure companies find the right workers who will excel.
If you already have experience in remote work or shorter workweeks, you have a bit of an advantage. But regardless, you should consider highlighting and providing examples of skills around:
- Time management
The idea of a workweek being only four days is certainly exciting, especially for remote workers. And many remote-first and remote-friendly companies are (and will continue) to be the leaders in experimenting in four-day weeks.
However, not every remote company will be able to fully offer this or may find some logistical challenges. Plus, not all job fields will have the luxury of cutting back hours.
And certainly, any in-office company may also struggle to fully adopt this work method. But there are some giving it a try as well.
