What is a Fully Remote Company? (And 15 Best Examples)

Fully remote companies have been thriving for years, but previous to the pandemic that started in 2020,  not many organizations were ready to actually commit to every employee working virtually. 

Certainly, there was a growing demand for remote work and better technology before 2020 that made remote work more lucrative for organizations to consider.

However, the idea of a company becoming a fully remote workplace was still a bit unprecedented or approached with caution. But fast forward to the present day and it seems each week a well-established or new exciting start-up has become completely remote.

So what does it mean to be a fully remote company? And what companies have gone fully remote that you should know about?

What Is A Fully Remote Company?

Fully remote companies are organizations that do not have a physical office for employees to go and work from. Instead, a fully remote company enables all their employees to work from home or anywhere with a solid internet connection, which can span across various time zones and places around the world. 

Not all companies hiring currently are fully remote, nor will every business ever be able to offer that. There are also some organizations that are doing hybrid work, where you might work from home a few days per week and a few in the office. 

But a fully remote company means all the job positions they offer are 100% remote. 

And currently, only about 16% of companies in the world are 100% remote. It might seem like a low percentage, but it’s amazing still to think that there are companies that have no office for employees to work at. 

Some things you might notice when looking for remote work:

• Not all jobs are remote. Pending what field you are in, some jobs are remote and others are in an office location. This is not a fully remote company, but that still could be a good option for you.

• Temporary remote company. With the pandemic triggering businesses to operate differently in 2020, some organizations are indefinitely staying remote, but others might just be temporary. Make sure you ask and know what the company might be planning if you are looking for work. 

• Flex remote work. This is essentially the hybrid model mentioned above, where the company does not require you to be in the office every workday, but is not allowing you to be fully remote at this time. 

• Even if the company is fully remote, there might be limitations to where you can be located. For example, some organizations might only want to hire those located in the United States, as global employees can introduce more complications with employment and taxes. 

What companies allow fully remote?

As we have seen with the recent pandemic, many forward-thinking businesses decided to move to fully remote operations. Quite a few of them already offered some flexibility to work from home or had a mix of permanent remote positions and in-office.
